About This Library

Why Archangel built this library

Most people who reach out to Archangel Centers have spent time searching for answers before they ever call. They are trying to understand whether what they are experiencing is addiction, whether treatment is actually necessary, what treatment looks like, whether insurance will pay for it, and what to expect if they go. The questions are reasonable. The information on the internet is often incomplete, overly clinical, or written to sell rather than to inform.

This library exists to fill that gap. Every section is written in plain language, reviewed for clinical accuracy, and structured around the questions real people actually ask, not the questions that are easiest to answer. We cover substances, therapies, levels of care, co-occurring mental health conditions, the recovery process, family dynamics, and insurance.

The content is maintained by the Archangel Centers clinical and editorial team. We apply the same editorial standards here that we apply in clinical care: accuracy over simplicity, honesty over reassurance, and specificity over vague generalities.

Use the sections below to navigate to the topic most relevant to where you are right now. If you want to talk through what you are reading, our admissions team is available 24/7 at (888) 464-2144.

Where do you want to start?

Seven topic clusters cover the full landscape of addiction and recovery. Each one links to a deeper library of guides.

Substances

Substances & Addictions

What does addiction to alcohol, opioids, fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, benzodiazepines, and other substances actually look like? This section covers the clinical picture of each substance, the physical and psychological mechanisms of dependence, warning signs families and friends recognize first, and how each substance affects the treatment process. If you are trying to understand what is happening to someone you care about, or to yourself, this is where to start.

Therapies

Treatment Modalities

Addiction treatment is not one thing. It is a set of evidence-based approaches used in combination based on each person's clinical picture. This section explains the therapies used at Archangel Centers: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing, group therapy, individual therapy, family therapy, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), and trauma-informed care. Understanding these therapies helps you ask better questions and set realistic expectations.

Care Levels

Levels of Care

Not everyone who needs treatment needs the same intensity of care. This section explains the continuum: from medically supervised detox, to Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), to Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), to standard outpatient, to aftercare. You will learn what each level looks like day to day, what clinical criteria typically determine placement, and how the step-down process works. Matching the level of care to the clinical need is one of the most important decisions in early recovery.

Co-Occurring Conditions

Dual Diagnosis

Most people seeking addiction treatment also carry a co-occurring mental health condition. Depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and ADHD are among the most common. When addiction and a mental health condition exist together, treating only one rarely works. This section explains what dual diagnosis means clinically, why integrated treatment produces better outcomes, and how Archangel Centers approaches both conditions simultaneously rather than sequentially.

The Recovery Process

Recovery

Treatment is a beginning. Recovery is the long-term work that follows. This section covers what to expect through early recovery, how the brain heals over time, the role of community and peer support, aftercare planning, and how to build a life that supports sustained sobriety. Understanding the stages and the realistic timeline helps reduce the shock of early struggles and builds a foundation for staying in it for the long haul.

For Families

Family Support

Addiction affects everyone in a family system, not just the person using. This section is written for family members, partners, and close friends who want to understand what they are dealing with, how to help without enabling, what boundaries look like in practice, and what their own healing process can involve. It covers codependency, the difference between support and control, how to approach a loved one about treatment, and why the whole family often benefits from professional guidance.

Insurance

Insurance & Cost

Cost and insurance are among the first questions people ask, and one of the most common reasons people delay getting help. This section explains how behavioral health parity laws work, what most insurance plans are required to cover, how to verify your benefits before you commit to anything, and what out-of-pocket costs typically look like at different levels of care. Archangel Centers accepts most major insurance plans and can verify your benefits in a single call.

Our Standards

How this content is reviewed and maintained

Health information carries real stakes. A person reading about addiction or treatment options is often in a vulnerable moment. That is not the context in which to cut corners on accuracy.

Every guide in this library is reviewed by a licensed clinician before publication. We cite established sources including SAMHSA, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), peer-reviewed clinical literature, and published treatment guidelines. When evidence is uncertain or evolving, we say so rather than overstating confidence.

We do not write about Archangel Centers in ways that overstate our scope or capabilities. We are a licensed outpatient provider. We treat co-occurring conditions. We coordinate higher levels of care when needed. We are honest about what we do and what we refer out.

For questions about specific content, methodology, or citations, see our editorial standards page.
