A partial hospitalization program, or PHP, is a structured day-treatment program that delivers intensive clinical care without requiring an overnight stay. Clients attend treatment for several hours a day, five to six days a week, then return home or to a sober living residence each evening. Many people simply call it day treatment.

Under the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Criteria, PHP sits at Level 2.5, the most intensive outpatient tier. It is positioned just below 24-hour residential care and one step above an intensive outpatient program. PHP gives clients hospital-level clinical structure during the day with the freedom and real-world practice of going home at night.

How many hours is a PHP program?

PHP is defined by its intensity. At The Archangel Centers in Tinton Falls, PHP runs five to six days a week for roughly five to six hours each day, totaling 25 to 30 hours of clinical programming per week. That is significantly more than an intensive outpatient program, which usually runs 9 to 15 hours weekly.

What happens in a typical PHP day?

PHP days are full and intentionally structured to keep clients engaged from morning to mid-afternoon. While each treatment plan is individualized, most days share a similar rhythm.
