Crisis and behavioral health access in Mecklenburg County

The Charlotte area has hospital-based and county behavioral health resources that handle crisis stabilization, psychiatric evaluation, and referrals. If a loved one is in crisis or you are weighing involuntary commitment, these are appropriate starting points alongside 911 and 988.

NC Medicaid and behavioral health coordination

For residents with North Carolina Medicaid, behavioral health and substance use services in Mecklenburg County are coordinated through the local management entity and Tailored Plan.

• Alliance Health serves as the Tailored Plan and local management entity / managed care organization for behavioral health and substance use services in Mecklenburg County
• Ask Alliance Health or your plan about covered SUD assessment, outpatient, IOP, partial hospitalization, and medication-assisted treatment
• North Carolina expanded Medicaid in December 2023, broadening who can access these covered services

Naloxone and mutual-aid support

Naloxone (Narcan) reverses an opioid overdose and is widely available in North Carolina without a prescription. Peer support also plays a durable role in recovery, and the Charlotte area has an active network of free mutual-aid meetings.

• Naloxone is available at North Carolina pharmacies without a prescription under a standing order
• Many community programs distribute naloxone for free; learn the signs of an overdose in advance
• Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings throughout the Charlotte area
• Family support groups such as Al-Anon and Nar-Anon for loved ones

Archangel Centers is bringing a licensed outpatient program to the Charlotte area: PHP, IOP, and standard outpatient care, plus dual diagnosis treatment and coordinated detox referrals to accredited partners when a higher level of care is needed first. We will be the clinical treatment piece of the local recovery picture for Mecklenburg County families.
